Mechanical Properties
The mechanical properties of AISI 4142 alloy steel are highlighted below.
Properties
Poisson's ratio 0.27-0.30
Hardness, Brinell (annealed and cold drawn) 187-229
Hardness, Knoop (converted from Brinell hardness) 230
Hardness, Rockwell B (converted from Brinell hardness) 94
Hardness, Rockwell C (converted from Brinell hardness, value below normal HRC range, for comparison purposes only) 15
Hardness, Vickers (converted from Brinell hardness) 218
Machinability (annealed and cold drawn, based AISI 1212 steel, as on 100 machinability) 65
Heat treatment:
Annealing: For optimum machinability this grade of steel should be annealed to a structure of coarse pearlite to coarse spheroidite. The steel should be austenitized at 1550ºF (845ºC) and cooled to 1390ºF (755ºC) at 25ºF (14ºF) per hour prior to air cooling, or alternately cooled from the austenitizing temperature to 1250ºF (675ºC) and held for 5 hours, for an iso-anneal.
Normalizing: This steel is normalized at 1600ºF (870ºC) followed by air cooling.
Hardening: The steel will be austenitized at 1550 - 1600ºF (845 - 870ºC) followed by water or oil quenching, depending upon size and intricacy of section.
Tempering: The steel will be tempered at a temperature previously known to give the required mechanical properties for the section size and intricacy in question.
Machinability: This grade is readily machinable following a heat treatment that will give the structure required for optimum machinability.
Weldability: The steel may be welded by normal fusion methods, but only in the annealed or normalized conditions. The steel should not be welded following harden and temper operations. For this level of carbon content, pre-heat and post-heat are definitely recommended.
Characteristics of AISI 4142
This alloy is a medium-carbon steel with chromium and molybdenum added as strengtheners. It is capable of being heat treated to good strength levels whilst maintaining reasonable toughness.
